Why Miffy’s design has never gone out of style

Miffy has been an icon for over 70 years – but why?

A simple beginning

Miffy was created by Dick Bruna, who believed in keeping things very simple – only the most important shapes and colours to tell the story.

Why simple design lasts

Trends come and go but simple design stays. Miffy is easy to recognise, even from far away – she’s made up of basic shapes: a circle for a head, two cross lines for a mouth and small lines for eyes.

This simplicity means it never feels old.

Colour that feels calm

Dick Bruna’s colour palette for Miffy is bright but gentle. Four bold colours of red, blue, yellow and green which feel friendly and familiar, helping Miffy’s design to stay timeless.

A design for everyone

People of all ages love Miffy for many reason: children see something friendly and fun; adults see something calm and nostalgic; design lovers see balance, space and clarity.

The power of less

In a world full of noise, simple things feel comforting and Miffy’s design leaves space to breathe, imagine and feel which is why minimalist design continues to inspire homes, fashion and modern brands today.

A Dutch design icon

Did you know that Miffy was ‘born’ in Holland? Miffy is often seen as a symbol of Dutch design.

Still loved today

Even after many years, Miffy still appears in books, toys and homes around the world. Last year she celebrated her 70th birthday but hasn’t aged a day!
