Starting school is a big adventure for little ones and their grown-ups! There might be excitement, butterflies, a few tears, or all three but Miffy is here with some simple tips to help make that first day feel a little easier.
1. Practise the morning routine
A few days before school starts, practise getting dressed, having breakfast and getting ready to leave the house. This can help the morning feel familiar rather than rushed.
Miffy’s tip: Little steps make big adventures easier!
2. Choose clothes they can manage
School uniforms can have lots of buttons, zips, tricky shoes; practise putting everything on and taking it off before the big day.
Let your child have a go themselves, even if it takes a little longer. Being able to do things independently can give them a lovely confidence boost.
3. Pack a little comfort
If their school allows it, a small familiar item can help your child feel safe and settled. Even something as simple as a family photo or a little note in their lunchbox can remind them that you’re thinking of them. When Miffy was starting school, she’d take Teddy with her to calm her – why doesn’t your little one take our lucky Miffy?
4. Talk about school positively
Chat about all the exciting things they might do, such as, meeting new friends, painting, stories, playground adventures and discovering new things.
Try not to overwhelm them with too many questions. Sometimes a simple “I wonder what your favourite part will be?” is enough.
5. Keep goodbye short and positive
This one can be difficult! Give your child a big cuddle, remind them that you’ll be back, and say goodbye confidently. For example, Mother Bun would kiss Miffy’s forehead as she said goodbye.
If they cry, remember that tears don’t necessarily mean they’re having a bad day. Starting something new can feel emotional, and teachers are used to helping children settle.
6. Don’t forget the grown-up feelings
The first day can be emotional for parents too. It’s completely normal to feel proud and/or nervous or even a little lost when your little one heads through those school gates.
Take a deep breath. You’ve got this.
7. Celebrate the little things
After school, they might tell you everything… or absolutely nothing!
Instead of worrying if they don’t want to chat, give them time to unwind. Celebrate the small victories: putting their coat away, making a new friend, joining in with an activity or simply getting through a very big day.
Good luck, little ones! Miffy is cheering you on! 🐰🌼
